The counsel we frequently give to our children is usually along the lines of, "Pursue what you love and stick with it." But what happens if that industry suddenly evaporates? What if it takes a decade post-graduation for the child to realise that they abhor their chosen field? As a result of a lack of alternate skills to fall back on, we are boxed into the safe confines of narrow specialisation, restricted to a single linear path with only upward and downward movement.
